OTT Vs Theaters:

Most of the people nowadays commonly use the term OTT. This means that it is very popular among the people. But most of the people do not know the full form of OTT.  The full form of OTT is (Over The Top). There are various brands which provides OTT content for a (x) amount, they are:

1. Netflix

2. Amazon Prime video

3. Zee 5

4. Hulu

5. You Tube

6. You tube TV

7. Fubo TV

8. Disney + hotstar

There are many more worldwide. Now what this over the top here means, that any content which is streamed through internet or a live content is known as OTT.

Now the question arises that, why there is a debate or a competition that whether OTT is better or Theater?  This is because the situation and the likings of the people that have developed among people. So, really OTT is better than Theater? It was not necessary always because when we observe past records, people preferred cinemas more than online content. Due to Covid-19 situation, people are now addicted to OTT platforms and have least attention to cinemas.

It is a fact that generally in 21 days a habit is developed, and by considering this fact we can observe that the society have accepted the presence of OTT platforms very rapidly. Another point of difference is, when going to cinema house we generally spend time on taking the ticket on the ticket window and travelling from our house to the theater and then finally spending 2 or 2.5 hours to watch the film. There are limited options to watch on the screen. This is also a drawback of theater.

Whereas in the scene of OTT platforms the person do not have to waste any of the time mentioned above. The viewer just need a smartphone or a smart TV and an internet connection that’s it you are ready to watch anything you wish to.


 If we take a closer look then, the prices matter a lot. The problem of price is solved with the help of OTT platforms. In theaters, audience pay high prices compare to OTT platforms and the food items and delicacies are bit overpriced and in OTT platforms you are at home or in your personal place. So the cost of paying high prices for ticket and delicacies is nullified.

Talking about the privacy and piracy and restrictions on certain scenes, cinemas have been more concerned about the interest of public. Censor board plays very important role in this and in this period of time Censor board have interfered in OTT platforms but it played a key role back in time of cinemas. Piracy increased when people started to neglect cinemas and started finding movies and web series on certain sites and the much known application named Telegram. Thus to stop this process, Telegram restricted all the pirated movies providing channels recently so that no one can download movies or web series from that application.

The concept of Web series originated through OTT platforms and became popular among the people. Taking up a movie, it takes more effort to watch it in parts, but when there is a matter of Web series, the episodes are arranged so systematically that it creates a proper and strong suspense effect on the viewers and thus takes a lead in the industry.

In the conclusion, it could be said that at a point OTT is better than Theater but there are people who in present times love to watch movies in theater with their loved ones.
